Rice Weevils
Identification, Habits, and Control
About Rice Weevils
Species: Sitophilus oryzae
Rice weevils are small beetles that infest whole grains such as rice, corn, and cereals. Unlike some pantry pests, they develop inside the grain itself, making infestations difficult to detect early. Because they are often introduced through packaged goods, infestations can begin unnoticed and spread throughout stored food items.

Behavior and Risks
Rice weevils infest grains by laying eggs inside individual kernels. As larvae develop, they feed within the grain, remaining hidden until they emerge as adult beetles.
Homeowners may notice small beetles inside containers, grains that appear hollow or damaged, or activity within sealed packaging. Because the infestation develops inside the food, early signs are often subtle and easy to miss. Once adult weevils emerge, they can spread to other stored products, leading to wider contamination within the pantry. Infestations may continue even after some items are removed if additional infested products remain.
Because they are hidden during much of their lifecycle, infestations can persist and grow without obvious warning signs. Identifyingand removing all infested products is essential to stopping the infestation and preventing it from spreading further.
