Behavior and Risks
Paper wasps build small, open nests that are often visible in protected areas around structures. Early in the season, nests may be small and easy to overlook, but they can grow steadily as the colony develops.
Homeowners often notice wasps flying in and out of the same location, followed by the appearance of a visible nest attached to a surface. As the season progresses, activity increases as more wasps emerge and expand the nest.
Paper wasps are generally not aggressive unless their nest is disturbed. Most stings occur when people unknowingly get too close—especially around entryways, porches, or outdoor living spaces. Because nests are often built in frequently used areas, even a small colony can become a concern. Without removal, nests will continue to grow and activity will increase throughout the season.
