Behavior and Risks
Orb weaver spiders are outdoor spiders that build large, circular webs to catch flying insects. These webs are often constructed overnight and may appear suddenly in high-traffic areas such as walkways, porches, or entryways.
Homeowners commonly notice webs appearing between structures, near doors, or around outdoor lighting. Walking into a web—especially in the morning—is often the first sign of activity. Orb weavers typically remain in or near their webs and are not aggressive. While their size and webs can be startling, they play a beneficial role by reducing insect populations.
Because they rebuild webs frequently and remain in areas with consistent insect activity, webs may reappear in the same locationsday after day. While they do not pose a safety risk, their presence can become a nuisance when webs interfere with daily use of outdoor spaces. Managing lighting and insect attraction can help reduce activity in these areas.
