About Nuisance Ants

Genus: Varies by species

Commonly include – Argentine Ants, Odorous House Ants, Little Black Ants, and Acrobat Ants

Nuisance ants are the most common type of ants found inside homes and businesses. They typically invade structures in search of food and water, often forming visible trails along countertops, floors, and walls.

While they do not cause structural damage or pose serious health risks, nuisance ants can quickly become frustrating due to their persistence and ability to return even after initial treatment.

How to Identify Nuisance Ants

Size

  • Typically very small, ranging from 1/16 to 1/8 inch long
  • Uniform in size within a colony

Color

  • Light brown, dark brown, or black depending on species
  • Some may appear translucent or pale

Identifying Characteristics

  • Small ants that form long, visible trails
  • Often seen in large numbers when foraging
  • Attracted to sugary foods, grease, and moisture
  • Nest in hidden areas both indoors and outdoors

Where You’ll Find Them

  • Kitchens, pantries, and food storage areas
  • Bathrooms and areas with moisture
  • Along baseboards, windows, and entry points
  • Inside wall voids, cabinets, or under floors
  • Near foundations, landscaping, and outdoor nesting sites

Behavior and Risks

Nuisance ants are highly adaptable and can quickly establish colonies near reliable food and water sources. They typically enter buildings through small cracks and gaps, forming well-defined trails that can reappear even after being disturbed.

Because colonies may exist both indoors and outdoors, eliminating visible ants does not always resolve the problem. Some species can even split into multiple colonies when disturbed, making infestations more difficult to control without targeted treatment.

While nuisance ants are not dangerous, their ability to contaminate food and persist in large numbers can make them a significant annoyance in both residential and commercial environments.
