Behavior and Risks

Brown recluse spiders are known for their reclusive behavior and preference for undisturbed indoor environments. They hide during the day in dark, quiet areas and become active at night as they move in search of food. 

Because they do not build large, visible webs, infestations can develop without obvious signs. Homeowners often only become aware of their presence when cleaning, moving stored items, or encountering a spider unexpectedly. Common signs include occasional sightings in closets, boxes, or behind furniture, as well as activity in storage-heavy areas such as attics or basements. Their ability to remain hidden means that early signs may indicate a larger, unseen population. 

Bites typically occur when the spider is accidentally pressed against the skin—such as in clothing, bedding, or stored items. While bites are uncommon, they can be more serious than those of other common spiders and may require medical attention. Because of their hidden nature, infestations can persist if conditions remain unchanged, making early identification and prevention important.
