Silverfish

Identification

Silverfish range in size from about 1/2” - 3/4” in length. Viewed from the top, Silverfish have long antennae and are carrot-shaped, with scales that are silver or gray in color. Silverfish also have three tail-like appendages arising from the tip of the abdomen. They are also known for their ability to move sideways or even jump.

Detection
You probably have a problem when droppings, scales, or damage is seen. You may see a Silverfish run away if you pick up a book or paper product that hasn’t been used in a long time.

Silverfish may be found throughout the house but seem to prefer attics, living in and among stored items and boxes where they feed on surface molds growing on cardboard.

Impact
These insects are primarily a nuisance, but they do consume small amounts of human food and contaminate it with their body scales and droppings. They can do extensive damage to books and other paper products, as well as some natural and synthetic fibers.

Prevention
Try these methods to help prevent a Silverfish problem

  • Reduce moisture and humidity.
  • Caulk cracks and crevices to eliminate harborage areas.
  • Increase airflow to keep mold from growing on newspapers, magazines, or boxes.
  • Remove starches, glues, paper, or fungi to avoid potential food supplies.
